Types of Volunteer Opportunities

Below are detailed descriptions of volunteer opportunities

Athletic Trainers/Physical Therapists

Health professional crew members are needed to assist with morning stretches and overall health and safety on the event.

These crew members will be stationed at rest stops along the walk route and at the start and finish lines.

Requirements: Basic first aid knowledge or greater; athletic training experience.


Bicycle Route Support

Provide support to the walkers along the Challenge route. Provide support, encouragement, and safety. Help monitor Challenge Walk MS until all participants who have crossed the finish line.

Requirements: Must be at least 21 years old, have own bicycle, and ability to ride 60 miles or more a day.


Bus Greeters

Meet and assist walkers when they arrive at the hotel at the end of each day.


Check-in

Assist in setting up area and provide check-in services for Walkers.


Cheering Squad

Organize groups to cheer the walkers on along the route and at the start and finish lines.


Finish Line Fun & Festivities

Decorate the Challenge Walk MS event site and route to provide a festive and exciting atmosphere for volunteers and participants. Ensure that walkers feel a strong emotional impact as they cross the finish line so that they will feel their efforts have been worthwhile. Ensure that the property we are using is attractive, decorated, well maintained during the event and left in good order.


Food Services

Ensure that participants are well fed and the area used for food service is well stocked, kept clean and maintained.


Foot Soak

Foot soak volunteers are assigned to the overnight location to provide a soothing foot soak and minor foot first aid attention, as needed, to injured walkers.


General Activities

Assist with execution of weekend activities. Positions may include: staffing the information table, pre-event set up, stewarding the silent auction, coordinating half-day bag supplies, etc.


Ham Radio Operators

Ham Radio Operators provide critical communication from check points and along route.

Requirements: Appropriate equipment and certification


Labor

Set up and breakdown of all tents, tables, chairs and supplies for each area of the Challenge Walk MS, providing participants with an enjoyable experience. Ensure the property that we are using is left in good order.


Massage Therapists

Help soothe the aching muscles and feet of the hundreds of walkers who are putting their bodies to the test. Massage therapists are at rest stops and at finish each day.


Medical/First Aid

Trained medical professionals are needed at the start, finish, on the route and at rest stops to monitor injuries and well-being of walkers.

Requirements: Paramedic, EMT, Nurse (LPN or RN), Doctor, Nurse Practitioner


Motorcycle Escort

Do you own your own motorcycle? Take it out on a 50-mile journey that you'll never forget. Assist with route support by patrolling the route and assisting where needed.

Requirements: Must be over 21 and provide copy of driver's license and motorcycle insurance.


Office Support

Volunteer at the National MS Society office and help prepare, organize and distribute Challenge Walk MS materials.


Parking

Maintain a safe and efficient flow of traffic into the assigned parking area by directing participants, volunteers and guests to the correct parking or drop-off areas.


Welcome Table

Ensure Challenge Walk MS participants and volunteers are checked in, given correct information about the event, and directed to their room assignments. Provide concierge service if needed.


Route Marker

Route markers are assigned the task of placing and removing directional arrows along the entire route. Route marker volunteers are also instructed to check for unsafe conditions along the walk route and report anything of potential interest to Net Control via two-way radio or cell phone.


Photographers

Use your photography skills to capture moments of challenge and triumph. Must provide own camera.

Requirements: Strong photographic skills needed.


Rest Stops

Provide refreshments and information for Challenge Walk MS participants as they walk the route. Basic supplies will be provided for rest stops, but we encourage all rest stop volunteers to go the extra mile! Decorations, themed rest stops, candy, music, etc. are a big hit at rest stops.
 


Safety

Volunteers are placed at busy intersections or challenging areas of the route to provide safety for the walkers. This is to provide an additional safety component for the walkers to keep the event safe and incident free. Transportation is not provided.


SAG (Support & Gear) Drivers

Provide transportation and support to walkers who need assistance along the route.

Requirements: Must be 21 years or older to drive an event vehicle. Must provide a copy of valid driver's license and vehicle insurance.


Truck Drivers

Transport supplies to rest stops and pit stops along the route, as well as help set up rest stops and pit stops.

Requirements: Must be over 21 and provide copy of driver's license. Drivers with a CDL are preferred. Must be able to drive a 24-foot truck and can lift at least 30 lbs.
